A large delegation led by Professor Béla Merkely participated in the four-day 3rd Hungarian–Uzbek Rectors’ Conference held in the Uzbek capital, where Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS) was represented by HUSS’s Rector Professor Tamás Sterbenz.
A 15-member Hungarian delegation, led by Professor Béla Merkely, President of the Hungarian Rectors’ Conference, participated in Uzbekistan in the Hungarian–Uzbek Rectors’ Conference, which was held for the third time.
As part of the programme, participants first attended a plenary session, which was followed next day by discussions focusing on the establishment and development of bilateral cooperation. During this time, Rector Tamás Sterbenz visited the Uzbek Institute for Advanced Training in Physical Education and Sports Culture, as well as the Olympic City located near Tashkent, built for the 2029 Asian Games and equipped with extremely modern infrastructure. There he met with Ilhomjon Ahmedovich Tursunaliev, rector of the Sports Academy that supports and provides higher education for elite Uzbek athletes.
On the closing third day, Tamás Sterbenz and Béla Merkely were hosted by Uzbekistan’s Minister of Sport, Adkham Ikramov, with whom they discussed, among other topics, the remarkable development of elite sport in Uzbekistan. Minister Ikramov demonstrated extensive knowledge about Hungary, Hungarian sport, and the members of the Hungarian delegation, and spoke highly of Hungary’s sporting achievements.
The meeting also revealed that the development of recreational sport communities and sport in general is equally important for both countries, and a cooperation will begin between HUSS and the Uzbek Ministry of Sport.
