On the occasion of Hungarian Parasport Day, the Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS) hosted a special professional programme. During a pedagogical class of the Department of Martial Arts, the university sports club, TFSE’s para-karate athletes and a delegation from Japan’s Kokushikan University jointly demonstrated the sport’s power to transcend boundaries and foster inclusion.

On this occasion, the students were able to engage with the concept of inclusion not only on a theoretical level, but also experience firsthand what an inclusive approach means in the field of martial arts.

The event focussed on international exchange of experience and an inclusive approach. Participants included TFSE’s para-karate athletes and members of the visiting delegation from Japan’s Kokushikan University. The joint training created a unique intercultural dialogue on the mat, also called tatami, where Hungarian and Japanese students, both with and without disabilities, worked together in small groups. The direct collaboration went beyond practicing technical elements: participants also gained insight into the deliberate, methodologically grounded implementation of inclusive sports activities.

Such occasions are particularly valuable for future physical education teachers. Students experienced firsthand how karate instruction can be adapted to diverse individual needs, and how international collaboration can enrich pedagogical methods. The joint work once again demonstrated that sport – and karate in particular – is a universal language capable of breaking down physical and cultural barriers, guiding participants toward mutual respect and conscious development.
