The Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS) will once again host a prestigious event. On August 20, 2025, Hungary’s national holiday, Thomas Bach, former President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will be conferred an honorary doctorate degree. The ceremony will take place in the university’s Athens Hall at 10:30 am.
Thomas Bach is globally recognized for his leadership in sport, particularly within the Olympic movement. Serving as IOC President from 2013 to 2025, he oversaw major reforms, promoted ethical principles in sport, sustainability, and emphasized the social role of sport. As an athlete, Bach won gold with the West German foil team at the 1976 Montreal Olympics and became a world champion, giving him a dual perspective as both elite athlete and sports leader—an invaluable example for students at a sports university.
The honorary doctorate represents one of HUSS’s highest honors, awarded to individuals with exceptional achievements or those contributing to areas aligned with the university’s values. Bach’s recognition strengthens HUSS’s international profile and symbolizes its commitment to Olympism, sports excellence, and global sports diplomacy. The event allows students and faculty to engage directly with a key figure in international sport and gain insight into the Olympic movement’s future.
Thomas Bach joins a distinguished list of HUSS honorary doctors, including pioneers like Dr Kenneth H. Cooper, middle-distance Olympic champion and sports administrator Lord Sebastian Coe, IOC legend Juan Antonio Samaranch, and former IOC President Jacques Rogge, highlighting HUSS’s tradition of honoring individuals who have significantly shaped sport globally.
The ceremony on August 20 is more than a formal event, it is a declaration of values, emphasizing sport’s moral and social educational impact, authentically conveyed through the example of its greatest figures.
