The Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS), celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, received an International Fair Play Award at the organization's award ceremony held in Budapest on Monday.
On May 19, the official World Fair Play Day recognized by the United Nations, the first-ever Fair Play Award Gala was held at the Royal Riding Hall in Buda Castle, Budapest. At this prestigious event, recognition was given to a total of 17 honourees, including Professor Tamás Sterbenz, Rector of the Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS), who was present at the event on behalf of the university.
Thomas Bach, outgoing President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), was honoured with a lifetime achievement award, which he acknowledged in a video message. HUSS received the Willi Daume Award, presented to Rector Tamás Sterbenz. Stefano Domenicali, CEO of Formula 1, was also awarded a lifetime achievement honour, while the The International Federation of Association Football (Fifa) was recognized for promoting fair play.
At the gala, Jenő Kamuti stepped down as President of the International Fair Play Committee, and was succeeded by Sunil Sabharwal. Kamuti’s contributions were praised by Pál Schmitt, Honorary President of the Hungarian Olympic Committee, who emphasized Kamuti’s vital role in advancing the ideals of fair play.
The event was also attended by Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, who stressed the importance of fair play in both sport and society.
During the gala, it was announced that Olympic champion swimmer Dániel Gyurta had been appointed to the International Fair Play Committee, in recognition of his exemplary conduct in sport.
