Pál Merkovszki, a student at the Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS), acted as the goalkeeper for the US national team at the World Handball Championship where he played an active role in making history.
Pál Merkovszki, who starts his last semester at the Sports and Recreation Management Department at HUSS, holds a dual Hungarian-American citizenship. Earlier he chose to play for the US team which also qualified for the Men's Word Handball Championship currently held in Poland and Sweden.
The overseas team had never won a single game at the World Handball Championship, but this has changed now. With Merkovszki showing real talent in the goal, US has won two matches, one against Morocco in the first group stage and one against Belgium in the second.
"It was a great experience to be part of the US team and play at the World Handball Championship. I arrived back home in Hungary on Tuesday, and now I'm starting to feel the fatigue after the training camp and the matches”, said the 22-year-old handball player, who plays for Budai Farkasok that moved up to the Hungarian First Division last season.” Now I have time to rest a bit, then I'll get back to work, I've got league games to play, and I want to do well there too."
At the World Championship, he was voted the best player of the match in both of the team’s victories. Having achieved this, there is no doubt that he has written his name in the US handball history books.
