HUSS breakfast series ends with spotlight on EU sports policy and body-conscious movement

On November 26, the final event of HUSS breakfast series was held in the Sport reading room of the University Library and Archives, where current issues of the European Union's sports, physical activity and physical education were discussed policy over coffee, tea and snacks.

The programme was opened by Dr. Péter Farkas, Head of the Department of Social Sciences of Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS) and the project's professional manager. In his introductory lecture, he highlighted the elements of the EU's sports policy that aim to develop health awareness, active lifestyle and social cohesion. Then, Dr. Judit Farkas gave a presentation entitled " The EU’s physical activity and sport policy in the service of health", which highlighted the comprehensive picture of how sport and physical education are integrated into the EU's health policy and education strategies, with a special focus on structured education programmes and the support of lifelong learning.

The second block was closed by an interactive presentation by two HUSS alumni, Károly Mácsai and Gábor Schandl, entitled “Wisdom in Motion: Restoring the connection with the body through movement”. In their presentation, they described the development of body awareness, the connection between physical and mental health and the so-called 4F model (freeze, flight, fight, fawn). Károly Mácsai – psychologist and former HUSS coach – presented, drawing on his personal and professional experiences, how movement can become a supporter of mental health. Gábor Schandl – human kinesiologist, psychologist, fitness trainer – brought examples from the world of competitive sports and his work as a psychological helper, demonstrating the importance of paying attention to the body in terms of stress management and self-knowledge.

The programme continued with an interactive question-and-answer session, followed by an informal professional discussion, where the participants could further deepen the topics discussed, and there was also an opportunity to establish new professional relationships. The event addressed university lecturers, students, researchers and practitioners at the same time, forming a bridge between the worlds of sports policy, psychology and body-conscious movement.

The event was implemented within the framework of the HUSS Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Module project, providing an opportunity to share theoretical and practical knowledge as well as create valuable professional relationships.
