Olympic champion TF student Máté Koch states fencing is his life

World and European champion fencer, Hungarian University of Sports Science’s (TF) student Máté Koch has won an Olympic gold medal as part of the Hungarian men’s sabre team.

At the age of 24, the BA student of the Hungarian University of Sports Science (TF) Máté Koch can claim to be a world and European champion in men’s sabre and since last week an Olympic champion as well. As known, the Hungarian men’s sabre team, Máté Koch, Tibor Andrásfi, Dávid Nagy and Gergely Siklósi, won the gold medal at the Paris Olympics.

"It gives me chills just thinking about how much medals I've won in past 12 months" says Máté Koch. "Our legendary predecessors reached the limits of their abilities at the age of thirty or a little later, and I'm only twenty-four. It's incredible what my coach, Gábor Boczkó, has brought out of me, and he has a lot to thank for my achievements. Now that I'm an Olympic champion, I'm even more motivated in fact. For me, fencing is my life."

That's why he studies at the Hungarian University of Sports Science, TF.

Although his professional career is still far from over, he has admittedly decided to work in sport after his retirement. He will certainly be able to put more emphasis on his studies again.

"The university has a very special atmosphere because of all the athletes," says Máté Koch. “I am proud to be a student of the institution. I've received so much help and support that just can’t return it. I'm honoured to have my photo displayed at the university, and I'm also honoured to have been chosen as TF's Athlete of the Year the last time I was here. I am always happy to say yes to different requests and invitations."

He gets excited when recalling the team competition at the Paris Olympics.

"Following the individuaI competition, I had five days to prepare for the team competition, which is enough time," states Máté Koch. "I managed to restart the system, and as a team we collected points together, we really became one, which we are very good at anyway. The key element to success is patience, but most importantly discipline and consideration, because you can really get to know your opponents in a competition like this. In a word, we all gave our best and thus we deserved the Olympic gold medal."
