HUSS paralympic champion athlete Luca Ekler to act in a new role

The most successful athlete of the university’s sports club TFSE, Luca Ekler, is facing a new challenge. In addition to her sporting career, she will also work as a supervisor and instructor for the university’s Inclusive Sports Instructor Training programme.

It took Luca Ekler, a graduate of the MSc programme in Coaching at the Hungarian University of Sports Science by surprise that she was invited to take on a new role at the university. The athlete, who is preparing for this summer's Para Athletics World Championships and next year's Paralympic Games, was asked to become the university's supervisor for the Inclusive Sports Instructor's Training programme.

"It is a great honour to be thought of as a supervisor. It's a huge responsibility, especially considering that I've never done anything like this before. When I was asked to take on this challenge, I knew it was something I had already wanted for a long time. Although I asked for a few days to think about it, I knew immediately that I would agree to undertake it since disability sport is a passion of mine", she said.

Luca is going to replace the former supervisor Gabriella Trzaskoma-Bicsérdy. This course is only available at HUSS, and has been held only once so far (in 2019.) Organised in partnership with the Hungarian Paralympic Committee, the two-semester training course, which will be relaunched in September this year, will be attended by a team of experts with an excellent knowledge of sport for people with disabilities.

The first semester is mainly theoretical, while the second semester is more practical. Applications are invited from people who have completed a bachelor's degree in teaching, health promotion, coaching, sports organisation, or a diploma in physiotherapy or conductive pedagogy. Although the course is self-financed, students can apply for a scholarship.

Luca also revealed that she is ready to face the new challenge as she has had plenty of time to get used to the double workload.

"I've always been able to manage my time well, and for me sport and learning go hand in hand. I believe that if I manage my time well now, I can cope with the task. I can work with people who come from the same background as me and who support my ambitions. This opens a new chapter in my civil career, and it is not unlikely that I will spend the rest of my career at the university."
