Ákos Koller receives Carl J. Wiggers Prize

The American Physiological Society awarded the 2025 Carl J. Wiggers Prize to Professor Ákos Koller, Chairman of the Scientific Council at the Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS). He received the award at the end of April in Baltimore.

At the end of April, the annual meeting of the American Physiological Society (APS) was held in Baltimore, USA, where the prestigious Carl J. Wiggers Prize was also presented this year.

The Carl J. Wiggers Award honours the American Physiological Society (APS) Cardiovascular (CV) Section's founder Carl J. Wiggers, PhD, whose research defined fundamental pressure-flow relationships in the cardiovascular system. In addition to publishing definitive texts in circulatory physiology, Wiggers founded the journal Circulation Research and trained numerous future department heads and several APS presidents. The Wiggers award is presented to a scientist who is a Fellow of the APS Cardiovascular Section and has made outstanding contributions to cardiovascular research throughout their career, has been an active and committed member of the section, and who will attract outstanding new members to the Cardiovascular Section from the US and abroad.

The award was presented to Professor Ákos Koller, a research professor at the Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS), which is a tremendous recognition and honour not only for the awardee but also for HUSS itself.

At the event, Ákos Koller and Szonja Decker, a former HUSS student who is now a member of the Mayo Clinic, gave a joint presentation and exhibited a poster on respiratory research in collaboration with the Mayo Clinic.

During the event, Ákos Koller met with Professor Gerry Sieck, a distinguished researcher from the Mayo Clinic, who was also the former editor of the Journal of Applied Physiology. Professor Sieck's work is also significant in the fields of sports and respiratory research.
