Five-time Olympic champion wrestler Mijaín López Núnez, who retired at the Paris Olympics, is taking part in a one-week program series in Hungary.
As known, the Cuban legend made history in Paris by becoming the first athlete in the world to stand at the top of the podium in the same event at five consecutive Olympics. The Greco-Roman heavyweight champion arrived in Hungary last Wednesday at the invitation of the Hungarian Wrestling Federation (MBSZ) and has since taken part in a number of interesting events.
He also attended the university accompanied by Gábor Rögler, Secretary General of the MBSZ and Gergely Bábszky, Head of the Methodological Centre of the Kozma István Hungarian Wrestling Academy (KIMBA). Here he met Dr Endre Németh, Head of the Department of Combat Sports, and assistant teacher Gábor Farkas. During the informal discussion, he learned about the history of Hungarian combat sports and told interesting stories about his own career.
He explained that it is very important for a sport to have the right professionals trained, because without them, success cannot be achieved. He also said that he became the first athlete to triumph in the same event at five consecutive Olympics, which can be attributed to the fact that he subordinated everything to sport. It took a lot of discipline, sacrifice and courage. He says the main driving force behind his success was his family, which always supported and stood by him.
After Friday, López also honoured the coaches' training session organised jointly by the MBSZ and KIMBA, as well as the Wrestling Methodology Centre (BMK) under the auspices of the latter.
