The training of the volunteers for the Olympic Qualifier Series of the Street Games was held at the Hungarian University of Sports Science (TF). We are now heading down the home stretch to the competition.
The Olympic Qualifier Series is the ultimate stage for the Paris Olympig Games to be held this summer. The first stage of the two-part festival-style series was held at Shanghai (16-19 May), and the second one will be organised in Budapest (20-23 June). It will determine which athletes qualify for Paris 2024 in breaking, sport climbing, skateboarding and BMX freestyle.
The three-day qualification competition in Budapest will of course be assisted by nearly 500 volunteers. As usual, the recently established Volunteer and Sustainability Office of the Hungarian University of Sports Science plays an important role in their organisation and training.
The first part of the volunteers’ training took place in the Athens Hall of the university on 1 June. The venue was packed with participants, who not only learned about their tasks, but also got closer to the Olympic Festival of Street Sports and its atmosphere through spectacular demonstrations.
The event was launched by Dr Szilvia Perényi, Director of the Volunteer Programme and Associate Professor at TF’s Department of Sport Management. Dr Perényi promised that an exciting and dynamic programme would be held.
The event was opened by TF’s Rector Prof. Tamás Sterbenz, and Hungarian permanent member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Dr Balázs Fürjes.
Balázs Fürjes stressed that not only everyone can volunteer, but everyone should volunteer, as sport is a value through which those who participate can gain friendships as well as life-long experiences. Moreover, they can learn about cooperation, tolerance and problem solving.
Volunteers, who will need to carry out very different tasks, come not only from Budapest and Pest County, but also from many rural towns and even from abroad. Age does not matter: the youngest volunteers are 16 years old, while the oldest is 76.
The Budapest leg of the Olympic Qualification Series of the Street Games is organised by the National Event Management Agency, but the Hungarian Olympic Committee, the State Secretariat for Sport, the International Olympic Committee as well as some Hungarian sports federations are also involved.
