Rugby conference held at the Hungarian University of Sports Science

A workshop including presentations and a training session titled „The succes story of game of rugby in universities” was held on 13 March by the representatives of the University of Cambridge at the Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS).

University students who have either never heard of rugby or have never liked it must have changed their mind after having attended the University of Cambridge’s rugby conference held at the Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS), Budapest, Hungary, on 13 March.

At the invitation of the Hungarian Rugby Union, the masters of rugby visited the Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS) recently. At the event called "The success story of game of rugby in universities”, representatives of the University of Cambridge gave a lecture and organised a workshop followed by a training session at HUSS’s sports ground named after Dr Jenő Koltai.

The aim of the conference was to present the experiences of university rugby and familiarise the participants with the potential and strategic values of the sport, thus promoting the introduction and spread of university rugby in Hungary.

Participants were welcomed by HUSS’s Rector Tamás Sterbenz, who emphasized that it was the first time in the history of the university that rugby had been discussed at such a high level in the presence of highly qualified speakers.

"We are lucky to meet representatives of the University of Cambridge at this event as we are keen to incorporate rugby into our educational programme soon. The fact that rugby has not yet spread in Hungary is largely due to the fact that it is not part of education, teacher and coach training. HUSS is open to promote rugby as an optional subject and incorporating it into its bachelor’s degree programme. Our brand new sports infrastructure is suitable for teaching rugby and organising games. I hope that the two universities will establish a close relationship in the future, so we can gain a reasonable amount of knowledge from the Cambridge experts," he said.

According to Hungarian Rugby Union’s President Antal Kiss, rugby is not only a sport, but it represents a completely different culture and way of thinking which has to be introduced to Hungarian universities with the help of the University of Cambridge. He pointed out this event was the first step towards this goal.

Jonathan Andrews, Director of Rugby at Cambridge University spoke about the culture and values of rugby including teamwork, discipline, respect, sportsmanship and enjoyment, followed by a short presentation given by Dr Benjamin Gompels, captain of the Cambridge University men's rugby team on the history of Oxford-Cambridge Varsity games as well as the history of the Cambridge University team.

Then Jonathan Andrews took the floor again this time to talk about the history of rugby at the University of Cambridge as well as men's and women's teams. Team player James Benson gave a briefing on the UK university rugby structure and the link between university and professional rugby.

When the workshop held in friendly and cheerful atmosphere was over, the participants walked over to the Dr Koltai Jenő Sports Centre, where they were introduced to the practical side of the sport, learning about team structure, scrum, lineout and ball movement.
