Volunteering programme for the World Athletics Championships coordinated by HUSS is launched

On Saturday 1 April, the first training session of the 2023 World Athletics Championships Volunteer Programme was held in the BOK Sportshall in Budapest. The training of the candidates is coordinated by the Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS).

Two hundred countries, more than 2,000 athletes, 3,500 journalists and 2,500 volunteers are expected to participate in the 2023 World Athletics Championships to take place in Budapest from 19 to 27 August. The Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS) is involved in many aspects.

The opening event of the Volunteer Programme was attended by Bálázs Németh, CEO of the Budapest 2023 Nzrt that is responsible for organising the World Championships, Dr Ádám Schmidt, State Secretary of Sport and Miklós Gyulai, President of the Hungarian Athletics Federation.

Ádám Schmidt, former member of the Board of Trustees of HUSS, the government commissioner responsible for organising the World Championships stressed that around 400,000 visitors are expected to turn up in the newly built National Athletics Centre and one billion viewers are expected to follow the event on television.

HUSS Rector Professor Tamás Sterbenz proudly emphasized that the university won the right to coordinate the training programme.

"Training sports professionals is the basis for sports success, this is a great opportunity for everyone to learn what the world's top sports are like, what international standards they represent. Everyone who works here at this event will continue to represent this spirit in the future. The team of volunteers that will be formed here will be the foundation of Hungarian sport in the years to come", said the Rector.”

Dr Szilvia Perényi, Associate Professor of the Department of Sports Management at HUSS is responsible for the coordination of 2,500 volunteers who help to organize the world event, while the Csörsz street sports complex, which will soon to open, could be one of the training venues for the event.
