Hungarian University of Sports Science hosts successful international summer school

As part of its centenary celebrations, Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS) hosted its first international summer school between 21 and 25 June 2025. The event brought together 4 leading experts from around the globe and a total of 26 participants from 10 different countries.

The summer camp’s programme focussed on highly relevant research areas, including exercise and epigenetics, skeletal muscle aging, mitochondrial morphology, the mitochondrial life cycle, limits of VO₂ max, and exercise-induced oxidative stress.

These topics were presented by renowned international scholars such as Professor Scott Powers, well-known for his pioneering work in exercise physiology; Professor Li Li Ji, a leading authority in muscle physiology; Professor David Hood from York University in Toronto, founder of the Muscle Health Research Centre; and Professor Zsolt Radak, Vice-Rector for Science and Innovation at HUSS, and a leading expert on oxidative stress, hormesis, and DNA methylation in aging.

A total of 26 participants took part in the event, which was organised for the first time in HUSS’s history. The programme attracted researchers and students from China, India, Japan, Taiwan, Brazil, Albania, Kenya, Indonesia, Romania, and Hungary, including several doctoral students from HUSS, including seven online attendees.

The world’s top researchers and lecturers were invited to the event”, said Professor Zsolt Radák. “Participant of the four-day event reflected very positively, they were absolutely satisfied with the level of the lectures, and they also expressed that they are eager to come back for the next edition of our summer school.”

Professor Radák informed that if the university is planning to organise another event next year, which will include workshops on how to apply for research funds and how to write a publication – it will be very useful for young scientists and researchers. Moreover, a poster section will also be organised next year so that participants can be advised on their work.

“To have 26 participants is a good start, but this figure can be increased. We have ideas how to have more people register for next year’s event, especially online. All in all, the event was successful, and the university gained a good reputation. This proves that HUSS is engaged in high-level academic and research activities on international level.”
