The work of the volunteers of the 45th Chess Olympiad taking place in Budapest is coordinated by the Volunteer and Sustainability Office of the Hungarian University of Sports Science (TF).
Following Tuesday’s opening ceremony, Wednesday saw the beginning of the 45th Budapest Chess Olympiad 2024 that is being held in the BOK Sports Hall. The event, which runs until 23 September, has attracted thousands of participants from all over the world, and four students of the Hungarian University of Sports Science (TF) are taking part in the competition: Julianna Terbe as part of Team A, Zsuzsanna Terbe and Ádám Kozák as players of Team B, while Zoltán Medvegy acts as the captain Team B.
Volunteers have a key role to play in the preparation and smooth running of the Chess Olympiad. The Volunteer Programme of the tournament is managed by the Volunteer and Sustainability Office of the Hungarian University of Sports Science under the guidance of Volunteer Programme Manager Dr Szilvia Perényi.
"The volunteers of the Chess Olympiad have been working for two weeks, helping with the preliminary testing of the chess boards and the set-up of the event hall," said Dr Szilvia Perényi, associate professor of the Department of Sports Management at TF. "They have set up nearly eight hundred chess tables and boards, on which they have placed a total of about twenty-four thousand chess pieces. Our volunteers helped with the arrival of the athletes at the hotels, the handover of luggage, the departure of the shuttles for the opening ceremony on Tuesday, and the loading of the coolers. More than one thousand six hundred volunteer hours have already been completed before the start of the competition on Wednesday."
Dr Szilvia Perényi added that the Volunteer and Sustainability Office’s staff are guiding the volunteers with the help of 16 coordinators, for whom a tour of the event venue was organised last Sunday, followed by the handing over of uniforms and accreditation cards.
