International political problems have made it important for sports expert to promote peaceful coexistence and the elimination of conflicts between peoples.
Peace and Sport calls on international decision-makers to deploy the intentional use of sport as a tool for transmitting values for peace, relying on its universality, on its role models and on field actors trained with the day-to-day needs.
The initiator of the network is Professor Lee Jon Young from Korea. He organised an international conference in Kuala Lumpur from 26 to 28 July this year. He invited Dr Miklós Bánhidi, a member of the Department of Recreation at the Hungarian University of Sports Science (TF), Head of the World Leisure Youth Ambassador, former Vice President of the United Games of Nations, member of the Hungarian Peace Federation and the Hungarian UN Society as a plenary speaker.
In his presentation, the associate professor described how, as a representative of international organisations, he organised games and sports programmes on the Hungarian-Austrian border, at the Berlin Wall, in the Indian slums, on the famous Kwai River in Thailand, and peace camps in Hungary for young people from the former Yugoslav republics. He also reported on different events held in Hungary and the region, TF projects, international cooperation, successful participation in world competitions, and a commitment to volunteering, innovation and science development.
Institutions from more than 30 countries are part of the programme, and TF is the first Central European university to join the initiative, which we hope will enable our institution to make its mark in the peace-building process of sport.
