Lectures on sports biomechanics were held by Professor Toni Arndt last week at the Hungarian University of Sports Science (TF) with the participation of many track and field coaches, students, including foreign students.
Professor Toni Arndt (GIH, Sweden) gave lectures on topics such as sports technology, running biomechanics, foot injuries, and advanced footwear technology. This intense week included interactive courses with the participation of BSc, MSc, and PhD students as well as staff members, and an open lecture on the effects of modern footwear on sports performance and injuries. Additionally, TF students interested in biomechanics had the opportunity to participate and discuss their own research topics moderated by Arndt.
We interviewed one of the organisers András Hegyi and PhD student Eszter Pocsai about their experience.
„We are very happy we had Toni Arndt at HUSS for a second time in a short period. We had. He is a fenomenal lecturer, with great experience in bridging the gap between research and elite sports. Toni Arndt is a consultant at World Athletics, and is responsible for evaluating shoes; they form the rules on what shoes an athlete can or cannot wear. This sets a great example for our students on how to use high quality research to impact high-level sports. Toni Arndt arrived with a large luggage full of shoes, which were on the feet of athletes who broke world records in athletics in the recent years. It is not an everyday experience to hold Femke Bol’s or Mondo Duplantis’s shoes in your hands, and, in the meantime, discuss how these shoes affect sports performance. I am very happy that TF and the Hungarian Athletics Federation made it possible to organise this session. I am passionate about bringing experts to our university because these moments can really inspire our students, help put their knowledge and experience in perspective, and also helps them find ways to learn and improve. I conclude this was a very successful week”, said András Hegyi, research fellow at the Department of Kinesiology.
„I think it was a fantastic opportunity to take part in these high-quality courses and to have the chance to ask questions directly from a professor with such a great knowledge. I suspect that I will always remember the moment when I hold an Achilles-tendon preparation in my hands, or the shoes of elite athletes. We also had the chance to ask for advice on our own research and studies. It would be amazing if there were more of this kind of intense courses in the future”, said Eszter Pocsai, PhD student of the Department of Kinesiology.
Improving biomechanics knowledge of our students keeps propelling during the summer. Nine of our students participate in a blended intensive programme at the ’Measurement of the neuromuscular system in sports’ course funded by Erasmus at the Politecnico di Turin, Italy next week.
