Three-time Brazilian Olympic athlete Maria Portela to be trained at HUSS

Brazilian judoka Maria Portela immediately took the opportunity to participate in the International Coaching Course (ICC) launched by the Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS).

Maria has started to fulfil her dream of helping other athletes. She was selected as a trainee for the International Coaching Course (ICC) that takes place at the Hungarian University of Sports Science over the next 10 weeks.

The three-time Olympic athlete, who has won the Pan American Games twice, is visibly excited to start her ten-week course.

„I gained a lot of experience as an athlete at the three Olympic Games I participated in”, said Maria when answering the question why she chose the training offered by HUSS. „I would like to help athletes from other nations prepare for their competitions mentally. I know what a difference it makes if you are mentally O.K. If I had been prepared properly, now I would definitely have a medal from the Games. This is where the idea came from to become a trainer.”

Maria, who already holds a degree in physical education, said that when she heard about the coaching course at HUSS, she immediately applied because she knew it would be the first step towards making her dreams come true. The two-time Pan American Games winner is enjoying her time at the university, especially because she can learn so much from the teachers and lecturers.

“I hope that after the training I will be able to use the theoretical knowledge in practice and transfer my experiences to the athletes as a coach in Brazil.”
