HUSS represents Hungary at the joint international conference organised by EASS and ISSA

The 2026 joint conference of the European Association for Sociology of Sport (EASS) and the International Sociology of Sport Association (ISSA) concluded successfully in Jyväskylä, with strong HUSS presence.

Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS) was represented by a seven-member delegation at the conference organised by Sociology of Sport (EASS) and the International Sociology of Sport Association (ISSA) drom June 15 to 18, 2026. HUSS faculty members and PhD students served as session chairs and presenters, sharing their research topics and latest scientific findings.

This year's conference focused on the diverse roles, functions, and social phenomena of sport, exercise, and physical activity. Key topics included the responsibilities of sports clubs, athlete safeguarding, emerging trends in physical activity, sustainability, and the impact of technological development across different areas of sport. Researchers and experts in sport sociology and sport management explored the role of sport in various communities and societies, as well as how responsibility is understood and addressed in contemporary sport. The three-day conference was aptly titled "Responsibilities and Responses of Sport in Contemporary Society 2026."

Hungary was represented by the following HUSS delegates:

  • Dr. Szilvia Perényi, Associate Professor and former member of the EASS Extended Board
  • Dr. Tamás Dóczi, Associate Professor and former member of the ISSA Advisory Board
  • PhD students Lina Takuri, Martin Kiss, János Novák (also Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Social Sciences), Erzsébet Hegyi, and Gábor Mátrai

The scientific programme once again featured a high standard of academic excellence. Three keynote lectures addressed the most significant economic, technological, and societal developments affecting sport. Researchers from Europe and overseas presented their work in parallel thematic sessions. The programme also included a poster session and a workshop specifically designed for PhD students.

HUSS researchers and doctoral students delivered the following presentations:

  • Dr Szilvia Perényi (Sport Events): Social Acceptance of Sport Infrastructure: The Case of the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest
  • Dr Tamás Dóczi (Sport and Power Relations): "Of Course... But Maybe..." – Axioms in Hungarian Sport as Obstacles to Change
  • Erzsébet Hegyi (Sport and Gender): Gender and Cultural Change in Hungarian Equestrianism
  • Martin Kiss (Child Protection and Safeguarding in Sport): Safeguarding Awareness and Professional Socialization among Future Sports Professionals in Hungary
  • Gábor Mátrai (Sport and Media / Sport and New Technologies): Technology on the Field – But Who Draws the Lines, and How?
  • János Novák (Social Inclusion and Exclusion): Sport and Social Inclusion: Who Are We Helping, and How?
  • Lina Takuri (Sport, Health and Wellbeing): Social Determinants of Women's Physical Activity and BMI: Evidence from Jordan and Hungary

In 2027, the EASS conference will be held in Southampton, while the ISSA conference will take place in Melbourne. Once again, significant Hungarian participation is expected, offering an excellent opportunity to further enhance HUSS's international visibility, showcase its scientific achievements, and strengthen its academic reputation.
