Expanding U.S. connections – Students and faculty from Brigham Young University visit HUSS

Thanks to a previously signed agreement, 30 students and two faculty members from Brigham Young University in the United States spent several days visiting Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS), where they took part in lectures as well as professional, community, and cultural programmes. The promising initiative will most likely continue in the future.

The relationship between Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS) and Brigham Young University in the United States dates back nearly two decades. It began when Dr Martina Uvacsek and the Department of Health Sciences and Sports Medicine participated in a joint research project with the American university.

Over time, the connection between the two institutions became increasingly close, eventually leading the American side to express interest in bringing students to HUSS. Among other things, this intention materialized in the partnership and student exchange agreement signed by the two institutions earlier this year.

This also means that the Utah-based university has now become the third American higher education institution among HUSS’s international partners.

Shortly after the agreement was signed, at the end of April, 30 students and two faculty members from Brigham Young University arrived at HUSS as part of the “Semester Abroad” programme. The visitors spoke very highly of their experience: first, they participated in the international Scientific Students’ Associations Conference (TDK), then toured HUSS’s laboratories, the Sports Medicine Centre, and the sports complex on Csörsz Street. They also visited the Pető Institute and, naturally, admired the Hungarian capital.

One of the visiting lecturers, Ron L. Hager, professor of health sciences, gave a public lecture on aging, while Dr Wayne Johnson, a rehabilitation and physiotherapy specialist, delivered a lecture to HUSS students at a scheduled class.

The guests spent the remainder of their stay in Győr, Vienna, and at HUSS’s partner university in Bratislava before returning to the United States from Budapest.

This visit essentially served as a pilot programme for the cooperation between the two institutions, and if both parties are satisfied with the results, further similar and regular exchange programs may follow in the future. As part of this cooperation, two HUSS students may eventually have the opportunity each year to travel to the United States for long-term, semester-long mobility programmes.
