The IOC Olympic Studies Centre (OSC) has approved the launch of the SPIRIT Olympic Studies Research Centre (OSRC) at Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS).
Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS) has received significant international recognition: following the evaluation of documents submitted on December 1, 2025, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Olympic Studies Centre (OSC) officially confirmed that the university’s application meets the requirements set for Olympic Studies and Research Centres (OSRCs).
As a result, HUSS may join the global OSRC network recognized by the IOC OSC and headquartered in Lausanne. Under the leadership of Dr Nikoletta Sipos-Onyestyák, lecturer and researcher at HUSS, the Olympic Studies Research Centre will begin its operations at the university. (Full English name: SPIRIT (Sport, Performance, Inclusion, Research, Innovation, Training) – Olympic Studies Research Centre.)
The IOC’s Olympic Studies Centre was established in 1982 during the presidency of Antonio Samaranch with the aim of contributing to the understanding, education, and research of Olympism.
In its letter to HUSS, IOC OSC emphasized that the guidelines provide a clear framework for the recognition and operation of Olympic research centres, while respecting the academic independence of institutions. This is particularly important for ensuring the free and high-quality pursuit of scientific research, education, and innovation.
The centre aims to connect the values of the Olympic Movement with modern scientific approaches in the fields of sport, performance, inclusion, research, and innovation. Membership in the network creates opportunities for international collaborations, joint research projects, the organization of conferences and academic programs, and the strengthening of international mobility for students and researchers.
Maintaining this recognition requires the submission of an annual professional report demonstrating the continuous implementation of Olympic-themed academic and educational activities.
Professional content related to the Olympic Movement and the emphasis on Olympic values already play a prominent role in the university’s teaching and research activities, and these efforts have now been placed within an institutional framework.
This newly obtained recognition also marks a milestone in HUSS’s international engagement. The university centre’s network membership further strengthens the institution’s position within the global academic community of Olympic studies and opens new horizons for both domestic and international cooperation in sports science.
