Starting university in a new country can feel both exciting and overwhelming. That’s why the Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS) made it a priority to welcome its new international students with open arms at the very first International Welcome Day held on 27 September at the university’s campus.
Its main purpose was to ensure that newcomers could immediately feel safe, welcome, and supported in their new community. Around 60 students from across the globe gathered at the main reception area at noon, where they were divided into mixed teams to ensure everyone had the chance to connect across programs and nationalities.
From there, the day unfolded as a journey of teamwork, laughter, and discovery. Students rotated through a series of challenges that encouraged them to work together, test their creativity, and support one another. Whether guiding teammates through a blindfolded obstacle course, transporting a ping-pong ball with nothing but cardboard, or solving riddles linked to HUSS traditions, the activities were more than just games — they were opportunities to build trust and friendships.
At each stage, students also got a taste of the university’s spirit and culture. One memorable challenge involved solving a riddle about Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the father of the modern Olympic movement, whose statue stands proudly near the library. Teams could only earn points by climbing a tree trunk with the help of their peers — a perfect symbol of the blend of strength, creativity, and teamwork that defines life at HUSS.

The highlight for many was bubble football, where players rolled, bumped, and laughed their way through matches safely wrapped in giant inflatable bubbles.
After a well-deserved lunch, the adventure continued with a smartphone-based treasure hunt across the campus. Students explored HUSS’s iconic landmarks while piecing together clues, covering nearly five kilometres without even realising it. The final reward? A treasure chest filled with Hungarian sweets such as Túró Rudi and Tibi chocolate bars — a sweet taste of their new home.
The day seamlessly flowed into the university’s #BeActiveNight, where students were invited to try a wide variety of sports and wellness activities, from yoga and aerobics to speedminton, footgolf, and catchball. Beyond the physical activities, students had the chance to meet lifestyle consultants and local organisations dedicated to supporting young people in their new lives in Hungary.
By the time the lights of Dr. Koltai Jenő Sports Centre shone brightly at the end of the night, one thing was clear: HUSS is more than a place to study — it is a community. The Welcome Day not only broke the ice but also ensured that our international students felt safe, supported, and at home.
At HUSS, we know that feeling part of a community is just as important as academic success. The Welcome Day was a celebration of that belief, and the friendships formed will no doubt last well beyond the first semester.
