This year, Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS) celebrates its centenary with more than a hundred international students.
Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS), celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, has begun one of the most remarkable academic years in its history. What makes this autumn truly unique is not only the centenary itself, but also the outstanding efforts made toward internationalization. As a result, more than one hundred new international students have started their studies at the university.
While this number alone is already a noteworthy achievement, it further highlights the significance of this year: twice as many self-funded international freshmen have begun their studies at the university compared to previous years. Moreover, the number of nationalities has also doubled. Currently, international students from 56 countries across six continents are studying at HUSS.
The numbers, however, tell only part of the story — behind them stands an open, culturally diverse, and intellectually varied community that brings new energy to everyday life at the university.
The expansion of HUSS’s community is the result of carefully planned developments and fresh initiatives. The goals for internationalization have been supported not only by the new admissions system but also by the renewed recruitment and marketing strategy. As part of this, the university’s global visibility through modernized promotional materials, diverse campaigns, and the exploration of new communication channels were enhanced.

At the same time, there was a focus on not only the numbers but also the needs of the students, aiming to create an inclusive and supportive university environment for the freshmen. In addition to the Welcome Guide, which helps students navigate their first weeks, the newly introduced Buddy Program also plays a key role. Through this initiative, Hungarian and international HUSS students work together to support newcomers — not only with administrative matters but also in overcoming everyday challenges. This supportive approach is also reflected in this year’s Orientation, which was specifically designed to meet the needs of international students.
The exciting start to the semester will be followed by a variety of vibrant programmes. On September 27, the international freshmen will take part in fun team-building activities as part of Welcome Day — but that’s just the beginning. Throughout the entire semester, a wide range of events awaits them. In addition to a city tour, folk dance workshops, Halloween pumpkin carving, and a jointly organized international evening are also planned to take place. The programme series will conclude with a festive visit to the Christmas market.

Although the autumn semester has only just begun, it is already clear how much richer HUSS’s community has become — thanks in large part to the international students. Meanwhile, the International Relations Center remains dedicated to fostering a truly inclusive and ever-growing community, where diversity serves as a source of inspiration for the development of the entire university.
We extend our sincere thanks to all our colleagues and students for their ongoing support and contributions, which have played a key role in the successful start of the semester.
